AOL City's Best
2007 Top Ten Best Gay Bars
"Novak's moved in early October
2004 to its new crib after spending months at a temporary space (5
S. Vandeventer) and years before that at the popular 4146 Manchester
spot. Even before its new digs, Novak's was regularly voted one of
the top lesbian bars in St. Louis, and it still remains a favorite
with locals and out-of-towners as well. Need proof? Melissa
Etheridge paid a visit. If you're looking for a good place to catch
the Rams or Cards on the big screen accompanied by some beer and
friendly conversation, then look no further than Novak's. This bar
and grill features a menu of burgers and appetizers (takeout
available), weekly karaoke nights and a regular lineup of live
entertainment. If darts, pool, pinball, foosball or shaking your
groove thang on the dance floor is your style, they're all options
at Novak's. The bar dancers come out every Friday at 11PM and
midnight. Owner Nancy Novak makes constant improvements to her
place. The latest addition is a three-tiered patio with its own
stage and bar. So, you don't know Novak's if you havent made a
recent stop."

Entrepreneur:
Nancy Novak
Nancy Novak has always had
a knack for taking the initiative and being a natural leader. Before she
became a bar owner, she was known as the life of the party and organized
countless bashes, camping trips and PrideFest floats. With a few nudges
from friends to open a bar, Novak took the bull by its horns. In 1996,
Novak’s Bar and Grill debuted, and she has since taken pride in having
good food and friendly service. Now in her new location, just across the
street and down a bit from the original, Novak advises, “It can take 10
years for people to come into your door, five minutes to lose them.” -Written

"From open mic to drag
shows, Novak’s has it all. For a decade, Nancy Novak has been fine tuning
her beloved bar. It’s her goal to make sure that all of her patrons are
completely satisfied with food, service and activities. She caters to
everyone, and in turn has a large, loyal following of the GLBT and
straight community. Don’t miss Novak’s 10-year anniversary this November!"

Favorite Bar: Novak's Bar & Grill
"Open in its new location
for about one year, the New Novak’s is an attractive, spacious bar that
draws both men and women. Drag shows, karaoke, open mic nights and Texas
hold ‘em tournaments are some of the special events offered by Novak’s in
addition to food, pool tables and patio. On most weekend nights, a throng
of dancing patrons can be seen through the floor-to-ceiling windows that
line the front of the building."

Riverfront Times
2004 Best Lesbian Bar
"When is a bar more than its building? When it's Novak's. Losing her
original Manchester Road location didn't seem to faze the energetic
Nancy Novak -- she just shifted business to the cozy upstairs bar at
Magnolia's and started work on a new Novak's. Mag's upstairs bar is
lean, smoky and stocked with an ample supply of whatever liquid
you'd like to consume; the entertainment varies from an open-mic
night (Tuesdays) to themed parties, all detailed on the bar's Web
site, as is an amusing virtual tour of the new location, set for
4121 Manchester. The bartenders are friendly, and the cast of
regulars live up to Novak's' self-styled "Cheers for queers" image.
With the closing of the dance-oriented Attitudes, Novak's is
virtually the only openly lesbian bar in town, but it's a worthy
standard-bearer."

Riverfront Times
2003 Best Lesbian Bar
"Novak's Bar & Grill serves up cold beer, burgers and barmaids who
double as dancers. Led by Becca, two nights a week the ladies
shimmy, shake and hang from leather straps on the ceiling, and
customers with a buck can steal a quick kiss. But it isn't just the
barmaids who go out of their way to welcome the (mostly lesbian)
clientele that ranges in age from early twenties to late fifties.
Bouncer and door-greeter Micki gives newcomers a rundown of the
night's events, which could include karaoke, dancing to tunes played
by DJ Jane or a band on the outdoor patio. The place is an
unpretentious beer-and-jeans joint, not the spot to order frou-frou
drinks (and certainly not a Tom Collins). But true to the party-pic
décor and softball trophy displays, Novak's is more than a bar; it
is a celebration of life and love. The doors are open to heteros and
men -- but the customer base is women who like women. So if you go,
be prepared for an old-fashioned, ass-squeezing good time."

Riverfront Times
2001 Best Lesbian Bar
"This friendly neighborhood place features great half-pound burgers
(served with fries and your choice of cheese for close to $7), good
appetizers and a fun atmosphere. Although you'll probably see more
women at Novak's, the bar and grill employs women and men, and both
are welcome there. When you order food and drinks at the bar, watch
the bartender attach a piece of paper with your order to a clip with
a bell and slide it, by way of a suspended metal wire, over to the
cook up front. Food is served from 4 p.m.-midnight. The walls of the
five-year-old business are adorned with photos of patrons taken by
owner Nancy Novak. Karaoke is featured Wednesdays, Fridays and
Saturdays. The bar also has a game room with a jukebox and patio
area. Novak's hosts washer leagues on Thursday and dart leagues on
Tuesday."
